Speed Up Your Composting

To get faster results from your tumbling composter, add one ounce Compost Swift mixed with one cup (8 ounces) water to your bin every two weeks.

Compost Swift is a non-toxic and 100% natural mixture of aerobic bacteria and enzymes, specifically formulated to speed the decomposition activity in enclosed off-the-ground composters. It's especially useful in two situations: 1) where you're composting a lot of dry material, such as shredded paper, shredded cardboard, brown leaves or dried grass clippings, and 2) where you're composting kitchen scraps that may include some meats, cheese and other materials that have a lot of proteins and fats.

The aerobic bacteria in the mixture are the microscopic organisms that do the work in your composter. They are naturally present in soil and in active compost. Adding a regular dose of these bacteria helps to establish a working population of them inside your tumbling composter. The enzymes in the mixture help break down proteins and fats in the vegetable matter, allowing the bacteria and other organisms to complete the decomposition process quicker and with fewer odors.

Adding a mixture of bacteria and enzymes together helps ensure that everything hums along smoothly inside your composter. If you're using a tumbling bin like the Sun-Mar 200 Garden Composter, during warm weather food scraps should begin breaking down within two days and be mostly unrecognizable after one week. If this isn't happening in your bin, and you're not sure if you have a good source of aerobic bacteria (such as from an existing hot compost pile), it's worth trying a swig of Compost Swift.

If your food scraps are becoming slimy or balling up in your tumbling composter, Compost Swift isn't going to help. Instead, try adding Compost Magic or another bulking material, such as shredded leaves, sawdust, or wood chips. You've got to get your "greens" to "browns" ratio under control before you can speed things up with Compost Swift.

If you have a tumbling composter and you're eager to make compost as quickly as possible -- and who isn't? -- then Compost Swift is a handy supply to have on hand.

Compost Swift is in concentrate form in a special dose-controlling 32 oz bottle allowing you to measure out one ounce of concentrate to be mixed with one cup (8 ounces) of water. One bottle is enough for one or two seasons of composting.

If you don't have a tumbling composter (i.e., a composter with a plastic or metal drum that you can rotate) but still want to jump start your compost pile, we recommend Super Hot Compost Activator. It's a different formulation that is effective for old-fashioned compost heaps and digester style composters in which the compost is in contact with the soil.
